Standard garage and parking space sizes
These are the typical US sizes our fit checks use. Real garages vary a lot, especially older ones, so measure yours: inside depth from the back wall to the closed door, inside width between walls (or shelves), and the door opening itself.
Garages
| Garage | Inside (width × depth) | Door opening (width × height) |
|---|---|---|
| 1-car | 12′ × 20′ | 9′ × 7′ |
| 2-car | 20′ × 20′ | 16′ × 7′ |
| Large 2-car | 24′ × 24′ | 16′ × 8′ |
| 3-car | 32′ × 22′ | 16′ × 7′ |
Single doors are usually 8–9 ft wide, double doors 16 ft; 7 ft is the standard height, 8 ft is common on newer and custom homes.
Parking spaces
| Space | Width × length |
|---|---|
| Standard | 9′ × 18′ |
| Compact | 8′ × 16′ |
| Parallel | 8′ × 22′ |
There is no national standard: local zoning codes set the minimums. Standard stalls are usually 8.5–9 ft wide and 18–20 ft long; compact stalls 7.5–8 × 15–16 ft; parallel spaces 8 × 20–24 ft.
Rules of thumb in our checks
- Walking room: about 3 ft of garage depth left over lets you walk past the car; under 1 ft is very tight.
- Opening the doors: about 2 ft beside the car opens a front door far enough to get out comfortably.
- Mirrors: published widths exclude mirrors, which add 6–12″. We add 9.0″23 cm and label it as an estimate.
- Roof boxes: a rooftop cargo box adds about 16.0″41 cm to the height.
- Longest trim: we always check the longest, widest and tallest version of a car, so a "fits" holds for every trim.
